Josh spent most of his early years with the run of the large farm where his father was employed as a ranch hand. After earning his engineering degree, Josh's father pursued a career in nuclear research, first at the Savannah nuclear facility in South Carolina before relocating the family to Southern Idaho to work at the INL. In 1998, the Roy family purchased a small farm near Princeton, Idaho, which they still own and operate.
Josh attended the University of Idaho and graduated summa cum laude in 2004 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. In 2025, he completed an MBA from Washington State University in Pullman. He and his wife Jessica married in 2003 and lived and worked for several years in Western Washington, where Josh grew his career in heavy industry at the Weyerhaeuser pulp and paper mill. They returned to Idaho in 2018 when Josh joined Clearwater Paper in Lewiston.
Josh and Jessica have four children: Elizabeth (17), Arianna (14), Matthew (11), and Benjamin (9). Jessica is descended from generations of farmers and ranchers going back to the 1800s. Her great grandparents purchased a ranch in Moore, Idaho in the 1950s that was operated by her family until 2006. She earned her Registered Nursing degree in 2005 and has worked most of her career as an emergency room nurse.
Josh has worked in traditional heavy industry his entire career, nearly 21 years. The majority of his experience is in the pulp and paper industry, where he has filled roles including engineer, maintenance planner, maintenance supervisor, maintenance coordinator, operations supervisor, and currently operations assistant superintendent.
If elected, Josh would be the only member of the U.S. Senate — and perhaps all of Congress — with 20 years of heavy industrial experience. Very few members of Congress can feel at home at a farm, mine, smelter, rolling mill, sawmill, steel mill, or machine shop. Josh can.
